Biosphere

The biosphere is also a critical element of the carbon cycle. Here is how carbon enters and leaves the biosphere.

  • The biosphere is primarily concerned with plant life on the surface of the earth. Most carbon leaves the biosphere via plant respiration.
  • The burning of biomass also releases this. For example, forest fires release the carbon held within the trees that burn. In some cases where these fires are not started by man, they may occur in order to keep the earth in its natural balance.
  • Carbon can be held within the biosphere for millions of years. Plants and tree’s can store it for hundreds of years, while soils can store it for thousands, even millions.

The biosphere contributes significantly to the carbon cycle.
