Oceans

The Oceans play a huge role in the carbon cycle. With 2/3rds of the earth covered by water the oceans are one of the largest stores of carbon in the world.

  • The sea contains 36,000 giga tonnes of carbon.

  • Near the poles the sea absorbs it from the atmosphere. These are called areas of down welling.

  • In the warmer areas upwelling also occurs. This is where the oceans release carbon back into the atmosphere.
