Oceans

The Oceans play a huge role in the carbon cycle. With 2/3rds of the earth covered by water the oceans are one of the largest stores of carbon in the world.

The sea contains 36,000 giga tonnes of carbon.
Near the poles the sea absorbs it from the atmosphere. These are called areas of down welling.
In the warmer areas upwelling also occurs. This is where the oceans release carbon back into the atmosphere.
